How to Clean Gold-Filled Jewelry: A Complete Guide
Gold-filled jewelry is classy and affordable compared to solid gold. It is equally shiny and gracious at a reduced price. However, like any accessory, it requires special care to maintain its luster. Over time, dirt, oils, and even the environment can cause gold-filled jewelry to lose its shine or tarnish. The good news is that you can restore it to its former shine with DIY cleaning methods.
In this guide, we will outline safe and efficient methods for cleaning gold-filled jewelry, including how to clean it at home, how to clean tarnished jewelry, and how to clean 14k gold-filled jewelry.
Understanding Gold Filled Jewelry
Before we dive into cleaning methods, let’s talk about what makes gold filled jewelry unique. Unlike gold plated jewelry, which has a thin layer of gold that wears off immediately, gold filled jewelry is made by bonding a thick layer of gold onto a base metal like brass. This makes it last much longer and be able to handle daily wear and tear better than gold plated pieces. But care must be taken to make it last.
Why Gold-Filled Jewelry Tarnishes or Becomes Dirty?
Gold-filled jewelry collects dirt, sweat, oils, and even the scent of perfumes, lotions, and outside pollutants. Though it will not tarnish like gold plated jewelry, it does lose its sheen after some time. To keep it in a shining state, it requires frequent cleaning and appropriate storage.
How to Clean Gold Filled Jewelry at Home ?
- Cleaning with Mild Soap and Water
One of the simplest and safest ways to clean gold filled jewelry at home is with water and mild soap. This is mild and okay for maintenance use.
What You Need:
- A bowl of lukewarm water
- Mild dish soap (use no strong detergents)
- A soft toothbrush or cloth
- A microfiber or lint-free cloth to dry
Steps:
- Place lukewarm water in a small bowl.
- Add a few drops of mild dish soap and gently stir.
- Soak your gold filled jewelry in soapy water and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
- Use a soft toothbrush to gently brush the jewelry, focusing on crevices where dirt may get trapped.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove soap residue.
- Pat dry with a microfiber cloth and let air dry completely before wearing or storing.
Tip: This is perfect for everyday dirt and grime buildup.
- Baking Soda Cleaning of Tarnished Gold Filled Jewelry
If your gold filled jewelry becomes tarnished, you can remove the tarnish and restore its shine using baking soda.
What You Need:
- 1 tablespoon baking soda

Steps:

- Apply the paste on the jewelry using a soft toothbrush or cotton cloth.
- Gently wash the jewelry, not being too rough.
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
- Dry completely with a towel and buff with a soft cloth.
Tip: Baking soda should not be used on gemstone jewelry because it’s too harsh.
- Vinegar Deep Cleaning
Vinegar is a wonderful natural cleaning agent that will strip away stubborn tarnish and grime.
What You Need:
- White vinegar
- A bowl
- A soft toothbrush or cloth
- Water to rinse
- A soft towel
Steps :
- Add white vinegar to a little bowl.
- Soak the gold filled jewelry in vinegar for 10-15 minutes

Tip: Don’t soak too long, and do not use this process on pearl or gemstone jewelry.
- Cleaning with Toothpaste for Extra Shine
Non-abrasive toothpaste may be used for quick polishing and cleaning.
What You Need:
- A small amount of non-abrasive toothpaste
- A soft-bristled toothbrush
- Water
- A microfiber cloth
Steps:
- Place a small amount of toothpaste on a soft toothbrush.

How to clean 14k gold filled jewelry ?
Cleaning your gold filled jewelry is necessary, but taking good care can minimize the need for frequent deep cleaning. Follow these tips to maintain your gold filled jewelry in its original condition:
Store Properly: Store your jewelry in a dry, air-tight container to avoid contact with moisture and air.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Take off your jewelry while applying perfumes, lotions, or cleaning agents.
